Internal Family Systems

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a powerfully transformative, integrative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. It holds true that the mind is naturally multiple which is a good thing. Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core. There are NO bad parts within the IFS model.

Why Internal Family Systems?

Internal Family Systems is the primary model used at this practice.  While other approaches are used to meet individual needs, IFS remains the focus of treatment for this practice.   So why IFS?

  • It does not pathologize you, your thoughts, your behaviours or your feelings.  It works to understand and work WITH these parts of you.

  • It supports one in looking inward for your pathway to healing.  We spend most of our time in our external world for answers when the answers lie within us.

  • Healing ultimately comes from addressing the protective and wounded parts of ourselves with the wisdom and compassion of our Self which we all have.

  • It addresses trauma, shame, hurtful core beliefs, painful thoughts, and harmful behaviours that many of us carry from our life experiences.

  • IFS can be used while addressing any overwhelm that arises for you and every effort is used to not retraumatize.  One does not need to sit in distress or tell painful stories to heal from painful life experiences.

  • It has been proving to be beneficial to address many wounds, including unresolved shame and internalized homophobia/transphobia. Healing these parts of us helps us live more grounded in our true Self.

  • The intention of IFS treatment is to live more fully in Self as we move through life.
